1. Chose lower-carbon transport

Instead of carbon offsetting, which has been shown to be ineffective, consider other ways to reduce your carbon emissions for a more long-lasting and meaningful positive impact.

If possible, travel to your tour by train or coach instead of flying. If you must fly, minimise your carbon footprint by:

  • Flying direct whenever possible (most emissions occur during take-off and landing)
  • Packing light to reduce fuel usage
  • Opting for economy class, as it uses less space and energy – and therefore emits less carbon – per passenger
  • Swapping internal flights for train or coach travel; you’ll see more of the country and meet more local people this way, too

2. Be thoughtful about food

Aside from your flights, the food and drink you choose to consume is the biggest source of your carbon emissions on vacation. Where meals are included in our tours, we already choose local, independent restaurants, but during free evenings or optional meals you can make a difference by:

  • Choosing restaurants that serve seasonal, locally sourced food to minimise food miles
  • Ordering plant-based dishes – even just a few times during your trip. Reducing meat consumption is one of the easiest ways to lower your environmental impact
  • Avoiding all-you-can-eat buffets to help reduce food waste

3. Support local businesses

You’ll meet local artisans on our tours – such as a Scillonian artist and a local producer in Madeira who provides a guided tour of his crops and then prepares a traditional meal for the group but you can further support the communities you visit by:

  • Shopping for souvenirs and treats from local artisans and markets instead of chain stores
  • Ordering local wines, beers and spirits, which often have a smaller carbon footprint than imported drinks
  • Dining at family-owned restaurants or cafés to directly support the local economy

4. Mininise your plastic usage

Don’t leave your usual environmental sensibilities at home when you go on vacation! Tap water is safe to drink in most of the destinations we visit so pack your reusable water bottle and coffee mug. Bring a foldable shopping bag for souvenirs, and avoid single-use plastics whenever possible. These small steps can make a big difference.

At GeoCultura, we believe responsible travel is about making thoughtful choices that benefit both travellers and the places we visit. Together, we can create a more sustainable and enriching way to explore the world.
