How do we allocate activity levels?

Activity levels are based on the nature of the activities, types of terrain, and the number and lengths of walks typically included. We also consider the season during which the tour takes place.

Our activity levels are intended to give you a good idea of what to expect and are not set in stone. Your tour leader can often suggest alternatives if you’d prefer to skip a particular activity.

If you have any questions about activity levels, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Leisurely

Leisurely tours are ideal if you enjoy walking short distances at your own pace.
On a Leisurely tour, you may encounter:

  • Short walks of less than 1 mile (1.6km) with little elevation change (up to 325 ft/100m) on well-graded terrain with no steep or difficult sections
  • Altitudes below 6,000 ft (2,000m)
  • Moderate temperatures, typically between 5˚C/40˚F and 32˚C/90˚F

Moderate

Moderate tours are suitable for those of average fitness. Longer walks are optional and we can suggest alternative activities for that part of the tour.

On a Moderate tour, you’ll mainly encounter:

  • Short walks of less than 1 mile (1.6km), with one or more longer walks of up to 3 miles (4.8km).
  • Modest ascents and/or descents of up to 650 ft (200m)
  • Paths that are well marked but may be rocky or slippery, with some steep sections
  • Altitudes below 8,000 ft (2,500m)
  • Temperatures may range from hot (above 32˚C/90˚F) to cold (below 5˚C/40˚F)

Challenging

Challenging tours require a good level of fitness.

The activities on offer are similar to those on our Moderate tours, but you may also encounter:

  • Walks of up to 10 miles (16km)
  • Elevation changes that exceed 1,000 ft (300m).
  • Some sections that are steep, exposed or precipitous.

As with tours in other Activity levels, the longer walks are optional, and we can suggest alternative activities.
