A native Dubliner and natural storyteller, John Walsh has all the credentials you would expect from an expert tour guide – and more. As well as being a geologist and a lifelong walker, he is also a stand-up comedian!
John’s comedy background shapes the way he leads his tours just as much as his remarkable depth of knowledge. He brings Ireland’s landscapes to life with lively storytelling, an ability to answer almost any question you can throw at him, and a talent for memorable impressions – including a particularly convincing Father Ted.
Behind John’s relaxed and theatrical style lies some serious expertise. He is Professor of Structural Geology at University College Dublin and Co-Director of the internationally recognised Fault Analysis Group. He was also the first Irish Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of London and has received numerous awards for his research and contribution to geology.
John has a natural ability to make the complex easy to understand; there is no need to know your basalt from your Burren! He helps you see how geology, history and human lives are woven into the places around you – and there’s usually plenty of laughter along the way.
